J.L. Jordan's Extreme Playground Makeover An Amazing Sight to See on Saturday - VIDEO
Over 200 Volunteers Spent Day Building Play Structures, Gazebo, Landscaping and Much More!
The volunteers built, 2 new play structures, a sandbox, a new gazebo, a new walking path, created a new memorial peace garden, along with planting new trees and beautifying the yard. Volunteers included, the school and community volunteers, as well as volunteers from the RCMP, military police, Brockville Rifles, Brockivlle firefighters and Home Hardware staff.
In addition, organizers say there were 60 children that participated in the childcare provided for the day.
Committee Co-Chair, Sherri Helliker-Doyle said the committee, aside from a bit of exhaustion, feel great about the results of the day. She went on to say, they achieved so much and most of all, were able to demonstrate what can be achieved when a community comes together!
Late in the afternoon a commemoration ceremony was held which saw a large crowd of volunteers, parents, students, dignitaries, RCMP Corporal Laurie White (one of the heroes being honoured) and the families of the four local heroes that the project was dedicated to. The four heros were, RCMP Corporal Laurie White, Corporal Randy Payne, Andrew (Andy) Moffitt, and Warrant Officer Class 1 Robert Moulton.

Organizers also say they have been supported and guided through the project by “Let Them Be Kids”, an international, non-profit organization that acts as a catalyst in building strong communities through building playgrounds in areas of need. LTBK saw uniqueness of the JL Jordan project, the need and strong willingness to succeed as reasons to support their selection as one of only 30 projects in Canada scheduled for 2012.
"Achieving the beautification of the yard was one thing... Bringing the community together and having the experience of this community build is one that will live on for a long time!" said Helliker-Doyle in a written statement.

Tomorrow is OUR BIG DAY
The Final Update for All Volunteers
Our May 5th Build Day is just one day away. This is a big undertaking for the J. L. Jordan Catholic School community and would not have been possible without the generous support of many businesses, volunteers and donors. Your support for this project has been amazing! The committee members appreciate all that you have done to make the Legacy Project a reality. Our students and community will benefit from your generous donation of Time, Talent and Treasure for years to come. We appreciate the support that the “Let Them Be Kids Foundation” has provided to us. Their continued guidance and mentoring has been instrumental in helping us achieve our goals.
Preparation for Build day began months ago, but on Friday April 27th we saw the first piece of equipment arrive. Millers Excavating donated a dumper and excavator to prepare the site for the base material and play structure. Thanks to the volunteers who braved the April cold weather to get the project off to a good start.
Here are a few last minute details for your information:
Very Important Registration Information
Please print and fill out the attached wavier and bring it filled out, but unsigned, to the registration table on Saturday, this is the only way you will be able to work. By having it filled out in advance it will make the process of registration smooth and easy…so we can get to the work of building a playground and better community.
JL Jordan Broadcast Live Around The World!
Our project will be broadcast live around the world! Our project is being broadcast live on the world wide web. As a Let Them Be Kids community our project is being featured on their internet broadcast network. Tell your family and friends to watch the action and celebrate with us, just have them go to www.ltbk.ca to see our exciting work, LIVE!
Commemoration Ceremony
Plan to attend our commemorative ceremony at approximately 3PM on build day. As you know from our previous email, newspaper articles and radio announcements, our project is dedicated to four most deserving local heroes – RCMP Corporal Laurie White, Andy Moffitt, Corporal Randy Payne, Warrant Officer Class 1 Robert Moulton. We have a number of guests that will be in attendance to honour our heroes.
Bring your Tools
Shovels, rakes, gardening tools, wheelbarrows, torx bits and a couple of impact drivers. Please label your tools – a tool registration area will be available with masking tape and markers for volunteers to label their own tools.
Parking
Parking will be at a premium on Saturday, therefore please car pool if possible; walk or bike is even better for the environment! Please respect any no parking signs in the neighbourhood. All Staff and Legacy Committee members are asked to park at Toniata School on Scace Avenue. Other volunteers may park there as well. If you choose to park on First Avenue, please park on the west side of the street.
If you are parking on Manor Drive, please respect the No Parking signs behind the playground area. Please park on the west side of that street which continues on the inside of the Manor Drive loop. This will allow for a safer flow of traffic and make life easier for our neighbours.
Child Care
Child care will be provided for school-aged children (ages 4-12). If you are bringing children, please sign in at the registration table first before escorting your child to the daycare registration area. Daycare registration will open at 8am. Please pick up your child from day care by 2:45 and accompany them to the area where the dedication ceremony will take place.
Plants
We need donations of garden plants for our yard. When you divide some of your garden plants, place them in a bag or container and bring them to the school on Build Day. We will have an area set aside for your garden donations. This will cut down on the cost of the plantings needed in our yard and your home garden will benefit as well.
If you wish to purchase some plants instead of sharing your own, we would welcome your donations.
First Aid
St. John Ambulance is generously donating their time and will be on site on May 5th.
Get rested and ready for our big makeover on May 5th.
See you there!

Our Fallen Heroes
J.L. Jordan Catholic School Yard Commemoration
May 5th, 2012
At J.L. Jordan we are guided by a compass that seeks to guide the children to do the right thing everyday - even when nobody is looking. This past week we announced that our project is being dedicated to four heroes from our community.
Our heroes are members of our community, from the past & present. Each of these individuals has done the right thing – “even when nobody was looking”. Their stories are each unique. The circumstances that they faced and their actions have impacted the lives of many, near and far, for years to come.
These individuals have demonstrated courage and compassion for others. They exemplify characteristics that we seek for our children.
We honour:
RCMP Corporal Laurie White – a former student of J.L. Jordan, Laurie has demonstrated undying determination and courage. As an RCMP officer, Laurie was injured in the line of duty. She is the only active duty officer in Canada to return to work with a prosthetic leg.
Corporal Randy Payne – On April 22, 2006 Corporal Randy Payne lost his life while deployed to Afghanistan when an IED struck his vehicle. Corporal Payne gave his life while trying to make a better life for others.
Andrew (Andy) Moffitt - Andrew Moffitt was a courageous young man who gave his life trying to help a friend attacked at an Ottawa bar in the late 1990s. Andy stepped in where he didn’t have to. He was trying to help someone in trouble and gave his life in return. We were honoured to hear that this is the first commemoration of Andy here in his hometown.
Warrant Officer Class 1 Robert Moulton – On May 5, 1943, WWII, the plane that Moulton was piloting was shot down by a German Bomber, according to a Dutch eyewitness account at the time, it is believed that WOI Moulton, in a heroic last-ditch effort, managed to avoid crashing the stricken Wellington Bomber into the village of Wilnis thereby saving many lives.
Each of the honourees above will remain permanently commemorated in our gardens. They will represent the points of our compass and provide direction for our students to find ways to do the right thing… even nobody is looking

Golf Tournament and Silent Auction
Golf Tournament
Despite a cold and rainy April day, sixty-four golfers registered for the first annual JL Jordan Catholic School Golf Tournament! Nancy Ker from Sunnidell Golf Club was most helpful in getting our brave and hardy golfers off to a great start at noon! Many thanks to Steve Clark, Mark Musca, Stephanie Pankow-Gray, Marg Shea Lawrence for sponsoring a child to participate in this tournament.
Tournament Coordinator, Robin Reil, had a wonderful time with his team of three young students. He found this to be a learning experience for his young charges. They learned about the golf ball washer, the lost balls in the bushes and learned not to use the golf club as a hockey stick or baseball bat.
Congratulations to the Carroll team of Ryan, Earl, Jason and Noelle for winning the top scoring team award in the scramble division. Matt and Carter Reil braved the cold to win the top scoring parent and child team award. Lucky Matt Reil also won the 50:50 draw! Grade 6 teacher, Jennifer Morris' team was awarded the Most Honest Golfers award.
Prizes for the golfers were donated by: Lisa Mastin, Joe Jordan, Gord Brown MP, Starbucks, OFIX – Dave Mallory, Jim Jordan, Kelsey’s, Luna Pizzeria, CDSBEO, Lake 88.1 FM (Perth), Brockville YMCA. Trophies were graciously donated by Kathy and Robin Reil.
We hope that by suffering today, we will have wonderful weather on May 5th build day! We sincerely thank our sponsors, participants, and volunteers who made our 2012 tournament and silent auction a success.
Silent Auction
Thanks to Paula Muir and her team for coordinating the Silent Auction. We thank our community for being so generous with the silent auction donations. Pierre Nadeau donated three beautiful bird houses, built and decorated in NHL teams –the Ottawa Senators, The Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. A complete list of donors can be found on the website. We appreciate all of your support.

Culligan Water Our Hydration Station on Build Day!
Thank You Culligan Water of Brockville for your donation of water for Build Day. Water means a great deal to our project and our volunteers as nothing is more important than the safety of our volunteers. On a day where we will be completing a lot in a short period of time, means not being properly hydrated could be unsafe to our volunteers. This donation ensures we will keep everyone hydrated and can be prepared for the number of volunteers who come out to support our project. This brings us a big step closer for preparing for our BIG DAY! Hope we see you all there!
